May the best (and most talented) woman win!

Bosom friends!

Soooo, last night hubby took me to the RuPaul's Drag Race season 7 premiere at Mansion night club in South Beach.

For the ones who are not familiar with this drag queens TV competition here is the deal:

RuPaul's Drag Race is an American reality competition television series produced by World of Wonder for Logo. RuPaul plays the roles of host, mentor, and source of inspiration for this series, which details RuPaul's search for "America's next drag superstar."The title of the show is a play on drag queen and drag racing, and the title sequence and song, "Drag Race," both have a drag-racing theme.
It premiered in the U.S. on Logo on February 2, 2009.
In the show's first season, it was the most-watched series on Logo, and in its second it became the most-streamed series ever on LogoTV.com. In 2014, TV Guide Magazine ranked the series as one of its 20 best television series picks of the year.

WOWZERS!

In Italy this TV show has been shunned as an Amish kid would have been if caught using a flushing toilet.
For that reason I only got introduced to this juicy and sequin encrusted competition when they were already airing its third season. Needless to say it was love at first sight. It was like trying on my aunt's heels when I was 6: once I was lost but then I was found.

You can only imagine the excitement I had to cope with when I found out that most of the brand new 7th season queens plus other special guests were going to come to Miami for a special premiere screening party. Basically I felt like I found Nemo.

The premises for a stunning night were all there, or so I thought...

Hubby and I got to the Mansion fashionably late because let's face it, a punctual drag queen has yet to be born. Once we got to the entrance a plum and quite rude bouncer told us that the venue was not ready yet and that we had to proceed to the end of the line of people who was waiting as well.
Yeah right. In my full regalia I was not gonna stand on the side walk in line. So I told him that my outfit was high class prostitute and not curb side hooker. I stood right in front of the entrance door and tried not to start melting.

Ten minutes later this lady in charged came to our rescue and told to all the male stuff who was just fluffing around "what are we waiting for, let them in!". As usual it takes a woman.

In we got and after being branded with another ugly VIP bracelet pass we got a bottle of Moet and I started bathing in the glorious amount of compliments I was receiving left right and center. Yes I will save modesty for another occasion.

Lady Bunny and Prima Donna.

After a few tunes provided by the legendary Lady Bunny (and a performance by a pretty but quite useless go-go dancer) a rather awkward male host introduced the episode premiere and we all got to enjoy RuPaul's Drag Rage season 7 first episode.

Half way through the episode we took a break from the screening to have a hoot with the contestants performances. They were the half time show.
Unfortunately this is when I kind of lost interest.
I understand what drag queen culture is and I am aware of its roots and its irreverent quality.
Unfortunately what I saw live did not meet my expectations. I was hoping for either stunning queens or talented ones. Yes, they were all done up, well painted and their wigs were all jagged up to Jesus but I was not spellbound at all.
What I saw was the usual weave whipping and lip-synching that has been done and done and done.
All of it heavily injected with as many swear words you can imagine. A seasoned sailor's lingo would have sounded delicate next to those queens. I am all up for a good amount of "motherfuckers", "pussy", "fucks" and whatnot when it comes to entertainment but when that's all that is being offered I get fed up to say the least.
Yes, they all have the talent to look a certain way but nowadays drag queens should offer more. The concept of a man dressing up like a woman to entertain has become way more main stream that it used to be. To be relevant in such industry ones must have more to offer besides pretty looks.

I felt there was a lack of artistry. Unfortunately I can't help the way I feel.

Indeed looking the way I look helps but I have been on many stages for the past 10 years and I have done it all (including becoming a trapeze artist). I would never expect to entertain an audience only with my appearance.
Last Drag Race season had at least two very talented queens. One of them is a great singer (Adore Delano) and the other one is a great comedian (Bianca Del Rio).
I haven't seen any of that so far in this season's contestants.
I do hope I will have to eat my words once we get deeper into the race.
Looks are a great helping hand but what remains is one's artistic talent.

Iconic and legendary RuPaul is way more than a beautiful man in a dress and so should be his "girls".

Ciao for now.
